November and December

NOVEMBER and DECEMBER

Inside the hive

As the weather gets colder, the bees begin to cluster and won’t feed when they’re drawn into this ball formation. The queen is laying very sparsely now. The workers’ jobs are to keep the small amount of brood there is in the hive warm. They may fly out to cleanse themselves, but if it’s cold they won’t break the cluster.

Things to do in November and December

Feed: Continue to feed the heavy syrup whenever the weather permits.

Water:  Make sure that water is available in the area of the colonies.

Begin hive repairs: I like to start in November and paint all my wood ware that’s in need of a fresh coat.

Plan for next season: Do you need to get more supers? Will you increase the number of hives you keep? Will you need to prepare frames and foundation?

Short courses: Sign up for a short course. These courses are great sources of information or to use as a refresher.

Honey: Makes a great Christmas gift. Purchase some nice jars and treat your friends and family.
